Generative Engine Optimization

Also: GEO

What GEO covers

GEO is the umbrella term for the set of practices that lift a brand's likelihood of being named in AI-generated answers. That includes:

  • Structured-data markup (JSON-LD: Organization, SoftwareApplication, FAQPage, Article, DefinedTerm) that lets models extract clean facts from a page.
  • Question-shaped content architecture — FAQ pages, glossary entries, comparison pages — that align with the questions buyers actually ask.
  • Citation source strategy — earning placements on the third-party domains models trust as grounding sources for the category.
  • Brand consistency across the open web so a model's confidence in naming the brand is high enough to clear its mention threshold.

How GEO differs from SEO

SEO optimizes for ranking inside a list of blue links. GEO optimizes for being named inside a paragraph of prose. The fundamentals (fast, crawlable, well-structured pages with credible backlinks) carry over. The key shift: there is no ranking — your brand is either in the answer or it isn't. The leverage point moves from keywords to questions and citation sources.

Sometimes called

GEO is sometimes called Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) or AI SEO. The terms are largely interchangeable in practice.
